Vor 110 Jahren hatte dieser frühe Science-Fiction-Film Premiere, in dem Zauberkünstler Georges Méliès in naiver Tricktechnik im Stile Jules Vernes eine Expedition zum Mond beschreibt. Der Film gilt als Klassiker, wurde ein weltweiter Erfolg und insbesondere in den USA von anderen Firmen mehrfach raubkopiert und verbreitet. Viola von Loewis wird den Film als Filmerzählerin kommentieren, wobei sie einen übersetzten Originaltext aus dem amerikanischen Verleihkatalog von Méliès benutzt.
This early science fiction film, in which conjurer Georges Méliès uses the special effects of his time to tell a Jules Verne-like tale of a journey to the moon, was premiered 110 years ago. The film is a classic, a global success widely pirated, especially in the USA. Viola von Loewis will narrate the film using the translation of an original text from an American Méliès distribution catalogue.
The Royal Bioskop bringt das 15 Minuten dauernde Bild DIE phantastische REISE nach dem monde mit einer bunten Reihe der amüsantesten Einzelheiten. Unternommen wird die Reise von einer astronomischen Gesellschaft und zwar in einem Geschoss, das von einer Riesenkanone durch die Lüfte getrieben wird. Nach verschiedenen Abenteuern auf dem Mond flüchten die Astronomen vor den sie angreifenden Mondbewohnern wieder in ihr Projektil; es gelingt, letzteres von der Mondkante in den Weltraum hinabzustürzen. Schließlich fällt das Projektil ins Meer, wird aber von einem Dampfer aufgefangen und nach dem nächsten Hafen geschleppt, wo die Astronomen feierlich empfangen und mit dem Mondorden beschenkt werden.

Georges Méliès had a talent for understanding the tastes and concerns of ordinary people, and for entertaining them without debasement or condescension. When the actors in A TRIP TO THE MOON bow and recognize the audience, it is not, as has often been suggested, merely a naïve misunderstanding of the distinction between stage and screen. It is an explicit recognition and respect for the audience for whom the films were made, an audience accustomed to the conventions of the popular stage. A TRIP TO THE MOON was the longest Méliès film to date, longer and more complex than films made anywhere else in the world. Eighteen settings, many months’ work, and a total cost of 10,000 francs were required. Black and white prints sold for 560 francs, hand-tinted versions for 1,000 francs, a steep price at the time. In the United States a black and white print from the original negative sold for $126.75 from Star Films. The fairground showmen at first objected, but were persuaded when they discovered how crowds were attracted to the film.
