Das Duo Cellophon hat sich gänzlich auf Live-Musik-Vertonung von Stummfilmen spezialisiert. In eher ungewöhnlicher Besetzung legen die beiden Cellisten eine ganz neue Klangfarbe auf die Schwarzweißfilme und eröffnen zugleich eine neue Sicht auf dieses Instrument. Paul Rittel (www.paulrittel.de) und Tobias Stutz (www.tobiasstutz.de) entlocken ihren Celli eine bunte Vielfalt verschiedener Sounds. Mal klingen diese kontrabassartig, mal wie Gitarren, Geigen, oder sie werden percussiv eingesetzt. Auch stilistisch scheinen die beiden Musiker dabei fast keine Grenzen zu kennen und vermischen sehr gekonnt Elemente aus Klassik, Jazz, Pop und Weltmusik. Den von ihnen vertonten Filmen nähern sich Rittel und Stutz mit sehr viel Hingabe und Liebe zum Detail. Wiederkehrende Leitmotive und Melodien unterstreichen langfristige Zusammenhänge im Film und schaffen dadurch Struktur und Wiedererkennungswert. Soundeffekte und Umgebungsgeräusche werden imitiert, dramatische Plot-Wendungen findet man genau so in ihrer Musik wieder wie subtile atmosphärische Nuancen. Das Ziel der Beiden ist dabei immer, den Film bestmöglich zur Geltung zu bringen und das Publikum somit in die cineastische Welt eintauchen zu lassen. Wie der Kunststoff Cellophan besitzt auch das Duo Cellophon sehr viel Knistereffekt.
The musical group „Cellophon“ specializes in silent film scoring. The cello duo aim to reveal entirely new perspectives, not just on the films themselves, but also on the capabilities of the cello: Paul Rittel and Tobias Stutz coax an astonishing variety of sounds from their instruments. The celli are able to mimic the sound of upright basses, guitars, or violins, sometimes even percussion instruments. The two musicians venture far beyond the limits of one genre, skillfully mixing elements from classical music, jazz, pop, and world music. Rittel and Stutz approach the films that are to be scored with careful dedication and a love for details. Repeating leitmotifs and melodies serve to illuminate large scale correlations in the film’s plot and create structure and recognizability. Sound effects and environmental noises are imitated, and dramatic plot twists are represented in the score just as much as subtle atmospheric nuances. Their goal is to present the film in the best possible light, allowing the audience to become more deeply immersed.
